Turquoise, a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium, is an opaque blue coloured mineral. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gemstone for millennia due to its hue.

Like most other opaque gems, turquoise has been devalued by the introduction of treatments, imitations, and synthetics into the market.

The robin egg blue or sky blue colour of the Persian turquoise mined near the modern city of Nishapur, Iran, has been used as a guiding reference for evaluating turquoise quality.

It has been mined at Neyshabur Mine, Razavi Khorasan Province, IRAN for 7,000 years and it is the the largest producing mine in terms of production.

The Iranians called the rock "Piroozeh" for victory, then the Arabs praised the word and called “Firoozeh".

The Tosca Mine in Northern Territory was producing turquoise into then1990’s.
